Floyd Kelly Punch, age 90, of Hildebran, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Trinity Ridge in Hickory. He was born December 24, 1927 to the late Kelly Emory Punch and Minnie Lee Poovey Punch. He was a member of Fairgrove Methodist Church for 20 years, and then joined Penelope Baptist Church with his wife, Marie, for the remainder of his life. He loved the Lord and served at Penelope as an usher, deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher, church moderator, and on the finance and membership committees. He was known to have the pocket on unending candy for all those - young and old - who came by to shake his hand.

After graduating from St. Stephens High School, he was drafted into the Army in 1946 and served in post-war Germany until honorably discharged on April 16, 1947. He then began working at Hickory Manufacturing in the machinery department. He married Marie in 1948 and then subsequently was re-drafted in January 1953.
He was assigned to the Army Signal Corp in Bremerhaven, Germany for twenty two months and honorably discharged for the last time in December 1954. Floyd then began working in maintenance for Hickory City Schools. He graduated from Clevenger College with a BA in Business under the GI Bill. He completed his working career as Vice President of Nelson Oil Company.

In retirement, this brought him time to devote to other passions. He remained an active Notary Public. He also volunteered with Catawba County Senior Center preparing tax returns for the elderly. In 1995, he helped establish the first senior center in eastern Burke County and remained on the management board for years. He then became a dedicated, long-term caregiver for his wife.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margie Marie Rhoney Punch in 2016; brothers, Harold Odell Punch, Ralph Emory Punch, and Charles Everette Punch; and sisters, Elsie Lee Punch and Ruby Elizabeth Punch all of Hickory.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Cheryl Punch Mason and husband Doyt; and his beloved grandsons, Matthew Christopher Mason of Hickory and Nathan Reid Mason of Chapel Hill. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Penelope Baptist Church with Rev. Nicholas King officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park where he will be buried beside his sweetheart and loving wife, Marie.

The family will receive friends from 12:15 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. on Friday at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Penelope Baptist Church, Out of the Ashes Fund, 3310 Main Avenue, NW, Hickory, NC 28601 and Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

The family wishes to thank Joni for her dedicated service and singing hymns with Floyd and Marie; also to Joan and Larry for being there whenever called. Special thanks to Trinity Ridge for the excellent care they provided during his brief stay.
